We are very excited to announce that the British Province of Carmelites have begun planning a World Youth Day (WYD) pilgrimage. WYD is an international gathering of millions of young people, in the presence of Pope Francis. It is a celebration of faith and culture, an opportunity to grow in faith, and to experience the universality of the Church. With young people as its protagonists, WYD seeks to promote peace and unity among peoples and nations from around the world.
WHAT IS WORLD YOUTH DAY (WYD)?
WYD was started by Pope John Paul II in 1984 as a time to celebrate and recognise young people and their gifts to the Church. Alongside local celebrations each year, every 3 years there is also an international gathering where millions of young pilgrims travel to a host country. Though called a ‘day,’ it is actually a week-long celebration of faith, a strengthening of relationship with Christ and an experience of solidarity with other young people.
