Death of Fr. Joseph Kelly, O.Carm.
06 January 2016

It is with sadness, but trusting in the mercy of God, that the British Province of Carmelites announces the death this morning (6th January 2016) of Fr. Joseph (Joe) Kelly, O.Carm.

Father Joe was born in Carfin, Scotland, on 10th February 1933. He joined the Carmelite Order as a friar making Simple Profession of Vows on the Nativity of Our Lady, 8th September 1954. Solemn Profession took place on the same feast three years later. He was ordained priest on 19th July 1959.

Over the course of more than 50 years in ordained ministry, Fr. Joe served in a number of roles, including as Prior of Aylesford Priory, and Parish Priest of English Martyrs Church in Walworth, South London. As well as ministering in his native Scotland, he spent some time in Wales at the Parish of Our Lady of the Angels and St. Winefride, Aberystwyth. He also served as Carmelite prior and parish priest at Faversham and at Sittingbourne, and served on the International Formation Team in Rome.

In later years he served as resident chaplain at Nazareth House nursing home in Cheltenham, and when he required personal care himself he moved to Nazareth House in Hammersmith, London, where he was looked after by the Sisters of Nazareth.

His death on the Feast of the Epiphany is pertinent; in so many ways in his ministry Fr. Joe was able to make Christ known and loved, serving in the British Province for many years and carrying heavy burdens of responsibility for many of them. May he now rest in peace, and rise in glory.
